Our Heroes - The Obama Kid

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
(Barrack Obama 04.11.08)
(Barrack Obama 05.11. 08)

Our Heroes - Dead Kennedys

It was all downhill for punk after The Dead Kennedys came around. Nothing that came out after "Fresh Fruit..." has ever been better. It was far too easy for a band to be full of violent meatheads than to say anything thought provoking or intelligent. Yes, Jello is a pompous cock, but he's a pompous cock who had a point to make. East Bay Ray and Klaus was important to the band. Ray's surfy guitar lines and Klaus's bass define the sound. Without those guys, Jello would just be some loudmouth prick.

In other words, he'd be Henry Rollins.

September Wallpaper

(click on the picture to get it in original wallpaper size)

This morning I just jumped on the bike and took it for a ride out in the countryside. The weather was beautiful and this picture is a great memory from a nice autum day.

When the goldenrod is yellow,
And leaves are turning brown -
Reluctantly the summer goes
In a cloud of thistledown.

When squirrels are harvesting
And birds in flight appear -
By these autumn signs we know
September days are here.

Schmuck of the Day - Mr. Morrison

Van Morrison has banned fans from drinking alcohol at his concerts.

The legendary musician – who battled alcohol addiction in the 70s and 80s and is now teetotal – has told bosses at the Brighton Dome in Sussex, England, not to sell any alcohol before or during his performance tonight (19.09.08) because it might disturb his singing.

The ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ singer insists his decision is not an attempt to impose his lifestyle on his audience.

The 63-year-old star is notoriously temperamental, and has previously said he finds it annoying when his fans walk around during his shows because he thinks they should be savouring the experience of seeing him live.

A spokeswoman for the Brighton Dome admitted: “It's not hugely common, but we hire out the venue so we played no part in the decision.”

Many concert-goers, who have paid between £40 and £105 for their tickets, are furious with the demands.

One disgruntled fan said: “Having a drink at a live show is part of the concert-going experience. It is a real shame Van has decided to make this decision.”

Morrison is also due to play alcohol-free shows at the Liverpool Philharmonic and Birmingham Symphony Halls next month.

Song of the Day - 21st Century Man

A penny in your pocket
Suitcase in your hand
They wont get you very far
Now youre a 21st century man.

Fly across the city
Rise above the land
You can do most anything
Now youre a 21st century man.

Though you ride on the wheels of tomorrow (tomorrow)
You still wander the fields of your sorrow
What will it bring?

One day youre a hero
Next day youre a clown
Theres nothing that is in between
Now youre a 21st century man.

You should be so happy
You should be so glad
So why are you so lonely
You 21st century man?

You stepped out of a dream
Believing everything was gone
Return with what youve learned
Theyll kiss the ground you walk upon.

Things aint how you thought they were
Nothing have you planned
So pick up your penny and your suitcase
Youre not a 21st century man.

Though you ride on the wheels of tomorrow
You still wander the fields of your sorrow (sorrow)
Tomorrow, 21st century man
21st century man
21st century man...

Song of the Day - No. 1 Hippie on Village Scene

HIPPIE HIPPIE HIPPIE HIPPIE

The word hippie derives from hipster, and was initially used to describe beatniks who had moved into San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. These people inherited the countercultural values of the Beat Generation, created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock and embraced the sexual revolution.

Following in the well-worn footsteps of the Beats, the hippies also used cannabis (marijuana), considering it pleasurable and benign. They enlarged their spiritual pharmacopeia to include hallucinogens such as LSD, psilocybin and mescaline. On the East Coast of the United States, Harvard University professors Timothy Leary, Ralph Metzner and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) advocated psychotropic drugs for psychotherapy, self-exploration, religious and spiritual use. Regarding LSD, Leary said, "Expand your consciousness and find ecstasy and revelation within."

Song of the Day - The Unguarded Moment

The Church is an Australian rock band formed in Canberra in 1980. Initially associated with New Wave and the neo-psychedelic sound of the mid 1980s, their music later became more reminiscent of "prog rock," featuring long instrumental jams and complex guitar interplay.

The Church's debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), earned them their first radio hit "The Unguarded Moment".

So hard
Finding inspiration
I knew you'd find me crying
Tell those girls with rifles for minds
That their jokes don't make me laugh
They only make me feel like dying
In an unguarded moment

So long
Long between mirages
I knew you'd find me drinking
Tell those men with horses for arms
That their jokes don't make me bleed
They only make me feel like shrinking
In an unguarded moment

So deep
Deep without a meaning
I knew you'd find me leaving
Tell those friends with cameras for eyes
That their hands don't make me hang
They only make me feel like breathing

In an unguarded moment

Song of the Day - America for Beginners

AMERICA FOR BEGINNERS

What's keeping the White House white
Is it chalk, is it fog, is it fear?
Are they staying up most of the night
And sending somebody out for a beer?
Is it bed-time for Bonzo?
Is it time for a change?
Is it flavour-free TV dinners?
It's a hard thing to take, when they make a mistake
America for Beginner.

The sound of a bell with a crack
Even the swingers are swinging right
The vigilantes are on the way back
With prime-time 'fight the good fight'.
What a start to a day
It starts three times with a 'K'
There's no sponsored hour for sinners
They'II bring back the hot seat
And turn up the heat
America for Beginners.

That's America for Beginners.

You wear designer jeans after dark
And your shirts are sharp-cut in satin
But won't you watch out for Central Park
And apartments in uptown Manhattan.

It's a sign of the times
Better stoy out in front
Because they've only got time for the winners.
Just keep living for fun, you son of a gun
America for Beginners.

Everywhere there's stripes ond stars
Men in dark suits in unmarked cars
Sipping Jack Daniels in Third World bars
They're close to the edge,
They're as close as you can get.

Blog of the Day - New Brasil Midia

The Good Stuff: Lots and lots of music. Complete Discografia of 100's of bands and artists. Not just the usual and best known, but often obscure and forgotten bands. What about the complete works of the great discoband Santa Esmeralda or all of the sweet spanish duo Baccara's records (they actually did more than "Yes sir, I can boogie"!). But just as often you will find famous artists like A-ha or Van Halen. All kinds of music, but Heavy Metal and Disco is not difficult to find. For those who want to get into music from Brazil, you'll find lots of for me unknown and unheard bands and artists. Try one or two, and you will get a pleasant suprise. Also a bunch of great great Compilations where you will find things that time really forgot.

The Bad Stuff: It's not actually bad, but I can't read portugueese so all the info doesn't help me very much. And maybe to many of the albums are in 128 quality, but that's getting better now. So not very much to complain about.

Song of the Day - La Booga Rooga

First Andy Fairweather Low got lost in La Booga Rooga in 75', and just three years later the evil spirit of The Rooga nearly destroyed the little englishman Mr. Leo Sayer.

Dont look back, that'll get you nowhere
A wall to wall suit and space circus hair

One step forward, one step back
Thats what happens and thats a fact

Watch out for la booga rooga

Some you win and some you loosa

Watch out for la booga rooga

Some you win and some you loosa

Song of the Day - Forever J

This is where Terry Hall (of The Specials, Fun Boy Three and Colourfield-fame) really proves he is one of those big songwriter (well he have done a couple of decent songs before this one). "Forever J" was the first single from the album "Home". And to my big suprise a comercial failure. This one deserved to be a big hit. Melancholy, strong lyrics and catchy as hell.

If you want more stuff from Terry Hall, check out this link!

What can I say. I fell in love the first time it hit my screen. Such a great blog in every terms. Twilight Zone is one of those rare blogs that really go deep into the music with lots of stuff I never dreamt I would hear again. Or for that matter, never heard of before at all.

Mainly a blog that focus on garage, surf, Rock'n Roll, rockabilly, alternative rock or just plain weird stuff. Check it out, you'll be a big smile after few minutes.

And they write about the music, not just posting album-links! Good writing, great selections, one of a kind.

Blast from the Past

The Eurovision Song Contest 1975 was the 20th edition of the contest hosted by SR Sveriges Radio (Swedish radio) and held in Stockholm, capital of Sweden. The arena for the event was the newly built Stockholmsmässan, at the time named S:t Eriksmässan, in southern Stockholm. ABBAs victory in Brighton the previous year gave Sweden the right to host the contest for the first time.
Intelligence reports at the time pointed out the festival as a possible target for a terrorist attack by the Red Army Faction which forced the organizers to tighten security considerably. The attack struck the West German embassy in Stockholm instead about a month later (see West German embassy siege).
The Portuguese entry "Madrugada" was an unabashed celebration of the Carnation Revolution, during which the country's 1974 Eurovision entry had played a pivotal practical role. According to author and historian John Kennedy O'Connor in his book The Eurovision Song Contest - The Official History, the Portuguese performer had to be dissuaded from wearing his Portuguese army uniform and carrying a gun onto the stage. Some competitors (notably Portugal and Yugoslavia) opted to perform their songs in English for the rehearsals heard by the judges, but in their native tongue at the final. Others, such as Belgium and Germany, opted for a mix of their own language and English. This year a new scoring system was implemented, one which is still used today. Each jury would now give 12 points to the best song, 10 to the second best, then 8 to the third, 7 to the fourth, 6 to the fifth and so forth until the tenth best song (in the jury's opinion) received a single point. The host Karin Falck several times confused the new system with questions like "How much is seven in France?" Unlike today, the points were not given in order (from 1 up to 12), but in the order the songs were performed. First in 1980, this changed.
Greece withdrew from this contest in response to the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, in protest of Turkey's participation. Despite this, a record of 19 countries took part.
The Netherlands' victory was their fourth. To date, they have not managed to take any more.

The results:

01. Holland: Teach-In "Ding-A-Dong" 152
02. United Kingdom: The Shadows "Let Me Be The One" 138
03. Italy: Wess Ghezzi & Dori Ghezzi "Era" 115
04. France: Nicole Rieu "Et Bonjour À Toi L'Artiste" 91
05. Luxembourg: Geraldine Branigan "Toi" 84
06. Switzerland: Simone Drexel "Mikado" 77
07. Finland: Pihasoittajat "Old Man Fiddle" 74
08. Sweden: Lasse Berghagen "Jennie, Jennie" 72
09. Ireland: The Swarbriggs "That's What Friends Are For" 68
10. Spain: Sergio and Estibaliz "Tú Volverás" 53
11. Israel: Shlomo Artzi "At Va'Ani" 40
12. Malta: Renato "Singing This Song" 32

Things that makes you go Nuts

Welcome to Old Smuggler

I've been a big fan of music-blogs for a long time, and have been wondering how to do a blog myself that don't just copy the great ones (or the dull ones for that sake). Well, when I started to think about what made me happy when I was a little kid, the idea struck me. How about a creative and unpredictable blog where everything can happen and you'll never know what to expect?

Yeah, I know..maybe not the greatest of ideas. But shit the same, I am going for broke. So here it is. OLD SMUGGLER is on it's way to fame and fortune!!
